Finding Your Way to Happiness

Finding the Road to Happiness 080214by Victoria Robinson

The prophet Jeremiah once lamented that he had forgotten happiness. Compare those words of despair to the uplifting words of King Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes when he said, “To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, …” This renowned King known for his great wisdom, in this same passage, also goes on to explain what causes unhappiness. He states, “… but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

Solomon’s own father, King David, understood what the answer to despair is. He stated so eloquently, “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” This is a man who had experienced tremendous happiness as well as dealt with an enormous amount of despair in his lifetime. Some of his despair was the result of sin and some of which was brought on by his enemies. To say that we can escape despair in our life here on earth is not a truth based on the Word of God.

Consider the tumultuous life of the apostle Paul. At one point he stated that he was burdened excessively, beyond his strength, so that he despaired even of life. Yet this same man found happiness even in the midst of sorrow and despair. In the book of Philippians he shares this truth with us. “But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. You too, I urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me.”

Dearest girlfriends, I pray that our hearts would be turned from desiring sin to desiring the goodness of our heavenly Father and therefore enjoy a happiness that only He can give us.

My soul has been rejected from peace; I have forgotten happiness. So I say, “My strength has perished, And so has my hope from the Lord.” ~ Lamentations 3:17-18 NASB

Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?  ~ Romans 2:4 NASB

I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter. ~ 2 Corinthians 7:9-11 NASB

To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. ~ Ecclesiastes 2:26 NIV

I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; yes, wait for the Lord. ~Psalm 27:13-13 NASB

For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life; indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us,He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us, you also joining in helping us through your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed on us through the prayers of many. For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you. ~ 2 Corinthians 1:8-12 NASB

But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. You too, I urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me. ~ Philippians 2:17-18 NASB

… On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. ~ 1 Timothy 4:7-10 NASB

How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, you will be happy and it will be well with you.~ Psalm 128:1 NASB

How blessed is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gains understanding. For her profit is better than the profit of silver and her gain better than fine gold. She is more precious than jewels; and nothing you desire compares with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who hold her fast. ~ Proverbs 3:13-18 NASB

He who despises his neighbor sins, but happy is he who is gracious to the poor. ~ Proverbs 14:21 NASB

Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, but happy is he who keeps the law. ~ Proverbs 29:18 NASB

I have seen that nothing is better than that man should be happy in his activities, for that is his lot. For who will bring him to see what will occur after him? ~ Ecclesiastese 3:22 NASB

In the day of prosperity be happy, but in the day of adversity consider—God has made the one as well as the other so that man will not discover anything that will be after him. ~ Ecclesiastese 7:14 NASB
